Tuesday Lesson May 21st with Mary Elson, 9.30 till 12.00

After requests from students, Mary will revisit Lebensohl for the next two weeks before Phill finishes the topic in June.

Players who came to Phill’s excellent classes on Lebensohl over the last month or so will enjoy some revision of this essential method of bidding after an opponent overcalls your partner’s 1NT opening bid. Here’s an example:

Your partner opens 1NT and opposition bids 2S. It is your bid and you have:

What are you going to do?  Meekly pass because you only have 6 points?  Get bolshie and bid 3C?  Which of course is strong and forcing!  Or come next Tuesday morning at 9.30 and get all the good information on how to deal with this and many other responding hands which are difficult to describe because there has been an overcall ahead of you. We start at 9.30 and finish at 12.00.  Table fee just $18.

STATE EVENTS

Thwaites Mixed Pairs This event is named in honour of Dr John and Marjorie Thwaites who were great Victorian players from the earliest days of contract bridge. John won the Interstate Open teams twice. Marjorie won the Women’s Interstate an extraordinary 12 times in a representative career spanning 1934-1968.  This year’s event commences on Wednesday  May 22nd at 7.30 at the Victorian Bridge Centre and runs for 4 sessions (No play on June 5th). This a wonderful opportunity to participate in a major state event which uses a very familiar format … matchpoints … just like all club Duplicates. The Thwaites Mixed Pairs Championship is the major Mixed Pairs event on the calendar.
